SSHRC jointly administers many funding programs with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council.

Applicants to any of SSHRC’s grants, fellowships or scholarships may also collaborate with researchers working in fields other than the social sciences and humanities.

Support for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

This fellowship supports Canadian and international postdoctoral researchers who will positively contribute to Canada’s economic, social and research-based growth.

Canada Graduate Scholarships—Doctoral Program

This program supports students engaged in doctoral studies in all academic disciplines.

Canada Graduate Scholarships—Master’s Program

This program supports students engaged in eligible master’s or, in some cases, doctoral programs in Canada.

Canada Graduate Scholarships—Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements Program

This program supports Canadian graduate students build global linkages and international networks through exceptional research experiences at research institutions outside of Canada.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

This scholarship supports Canadian and international students undertaking doctoral studies at Canadian universities.

Collaborative Health Research Projects

This initiative supports focused, interdisciplinary, collaborative research projects in any field of the natural sciences or engineering and any field of the health sciences.

New Frontiers in Research Fund

This program funds international, interdisciplinary, fast-breaking and high-risk research. Its three streams support ground-breaking research: Exploration, Transformation and International.

Canada 150 Research Chairs Program

This program provides Canadian institutions with a one-time investment to attract top-tier, internationally based scholars and researchers to Canada.

Canada Excellence Research Chairs Program

This program awards Canadian universities up to $10 million over seven years to support world‑renowned researchers and their teams in establishing ambitious research programs.

Canada First Research Excellence Fund

This program supports competitively selected Canadian postsecondary institutions to become world-leading research centres.

Canada Research Chairs Program

This program invests up to $295 million per year to help Canadian postsecondary institutions attract and retain some of the world’s most accomplished and promising minds.

College and Community Innovation Program

This program supports applied research and collaborations that enable commercialization, the adoption of new technologies, and technology transfer and adaptation.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Institutional Capacity-Building Grant

This program will help Canadian postsecondary institutions advance equity, diversity and inclusion policies, plans and training.

Research Support Fund

This program helps Canadian postsecondary institutions cover the costs associated with managing their research enterprise, helping them to maintain a world-class research environment.
